There are many reasons why British Columbia's homebuyers might want to consider purchasing a new home, and what better time than April, which is New Homes Month?

Today's new homes offer more value than ever before and can take a lot of the guesswork out of the homebuying experience. How are you enhancing the New Homes Month experience for potential new-home purchasers in your area?

B.C. builders continue to shine across the entire country.

G.D. Nielsen Developments Ltd. and Portrait Homes were both honoured with Avid Awards this week in Calgary, Alta. this year. Both companies also won Georgie Awards® at this year's awards gala, held February 23 in Vancouver. Find out more.

Although British Columbia transitioned back to the PST/GST tax system from the HST on April 1, a reported 15 per cent of B.C. businesses still have not made the switch to the PST/GST tax system, prompting warnings for the province's consumers to check their receipts.

Businesses that still need to register can click here for more information.

The Homeowner Protection Office (HPO) is offering two seminars in two different neighbourhoods to help B.C.'s industry transition to the new BC Building Code.

The seminar covers new material and explores the impact of the North American Fenestration Standard/Specification (NAFS) for windows, doors and skylights and what builders must know when selecting and installing them, and the changes to the required protection of walls between homes during design and construction.

The HPO presents this seminar on Thursday, April 18, 2013 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Surrey Arts Centre (13750 88 Ave., Surrey) and on Thursday, May 30 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in Vancouver at Science World at Telus World of Science (1455 Quebece St., Vancouver). Register today.

The writ is about to drop. Are you ready to vote? The next provincial election happens May 14 in B.C.

An election is also a chance for CHBA BC and its many residential construction industry members and partners to highlight issues important to the province's home building and renovation community, such as the need to restructure the Property Transfer Tax and how it is calculated and collected, and the need to finally establish the Professional Builders' Institute of BC.

Cast a ballot on May 14 and make your voice heard.

Urban housing starts in British Columbia were up by 13.1 per cent in March, compared to March 2012, reports Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), but edged a little lower compared to February 2013.

"Both single-detached and multiple-unit housing starts moderated during the past six months," says CMHC's B.C. regional economist Carol Frketich.

A newly referenced standard in the 2012 BC Building Code may require manufacturers to test a broader range of  NAFS (North American Fenestration Standard/Specification for Windows, Doors and Skylights) products.

As a result, there may be a temporary shortage of NAFS conforming products available in B.C. Any window, door and skylight installed on or after July 2, 2013 must conform to the new NAFS Standard as well as A440S1-09 Canadian Supplement to AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440, NAFS.

Are you a small business owner? The BC Small Business Accord has been finalized and unveiled by the provincial government.

An initiative started in October 2012 to establish a list of priorities to make B.C. the most business-friendly jurisdiction in Canada, the B.C. Small Business Accord is a living document that will evolve and change to meet the ongoing needs and interests of the small business community in B.C.

As part of our continuing efforts to ensure that Association members are fully informed about the work being done on their behalf, I am pleased to introduce two new resources within the Members’ Area of the CHBA website.  Just click on the links below to access these resources and information.

The Vision Action Committee area gives you access to all of CHBA’s Strategic Plans, from the 1970s to our current 2012 plan.  These plans show how the issues our industry faces have evolved over time, and how strong leadership within the Association has represented your business interests to governments.  For more topic-specific information that helped guide the Association’s strategic Vision Action Plan, just click on the ‘Material by Topic’ tab on the left.

To learn more about how CHBA is governed, visit the Annual Meeting of Members area.  The AMM Historical Resource Area connects you to CHBA information from annual meetings, Association reports, Board of Directors meeting minutes, and financial statements, as far back as 1944.

The CHBA is your Association, working on your behalf.  These two information resource areas trace our history, and show where we stand today.  I hope you find them informative.
