Energy-efficiency news for home builders

B.C. builders get more time

With the National Building Code's new energy objective now open for public review, increased energy provisions in the B.C. Building Code have been set aside for the short term. The provincial government will wait for the national standard to be finalized before updating the B.C. Code. That means B.C. builders have some additional time to learn energy-efficient building and prepare for the changes the Code is likely to bring.

It provides all builders who are required to use GST/HST NETFILE with instructions for completing their GST/HST return and reporting their new housing rebates. We are hoping that this information will assist builders and avoid some of the difficulties that are being encountered, such as processing delays, when the information is not reported on the return as required.

For immediate release
Minister Rich Coleman to deliver Opening Address at Upcoming HAS: Housing Affordability Symposium

Burnaby, BC (January 23, 2012) - The Canadian Home Builders' Association of BC (CHBA BC) is pleased to announce that the Honorable Rich Coleman, Minister of Energy and Mines and Minister Responsible for Housing, will deliver the Opening Address at the second market Housing Affordability Symposium. The symposium, co-presented by BC Housing, is a ground-breaking collaboration between all three levels of government and the residential construction industry to openly discuss barriers and solutions to market housing affordability in BC.

"We focus on affordable market housing as it continues to be one of the critical issues facing British Columbians living in some of the most expensive real estate in North America ," stated Bob Deeks, Chair of the Housing Affordability Symposium. "We are delighted to highlight the diverse and innovative work being done in many communities such as Vancouver, Vernon, Saskatoon, Toronto, Whistler and Langford among many others, that is having a positive impact on market housing affordability. Our high-profile group of presenters will engage the attendees from local and provincial governments, and industry via interactive Roundtable discussions to help develop additional solutions."

Affordability refers to the ability to support within one's means. In reference to housing, the commonly accepted standard is 'the cost of adequate shelter should not exceed 30% of household income.' According to RBC's housing affordability measures, BC's weighted average for all housing types is well above the 30% index and is the highest across the country.

The first Symposium in November 2010 produced An Action Plan to Address Housing Affordability in BC with a series of action-oriented goal statements to create housing affordability. All levels of government and the industry have provided feedback via Progress Reports, and HAS 2012 will not only assess progress towards affordability but will also further refine and refocus efforts to make housing within the means of all British Columbians. The symposium will take place on February 2 & 3, 2012.
